  • The debate 'Art fairs are about money not art' took place at the Saatchi Gallery 2010.

Speakers: Matthew Slotover, Simon de Pury, Sir Norman Rosenthal, Jasper Joffe, Matthew Collings, Louisa Buck

Art fairs, scoff the critics, have become shopping malls for the super-rich. They are giant marketplaces for the wealthy to buy, invest and speculate on the commodity of art. Galleries pressure artists to churn out 'safe', sellable works, which are not so much looked at as bought in bulk. As the critic Jerry Saltz put it, 'art fairs are perfect storms of money, marketability, and instant gratification'. Is this criticism justified? Or are art fairs in fact the perfect format for visitors to see art from all over the world which they wouldn't otherwise see? And by allowing artists to show their work to potential buyers en masse are these shows a crucial lifeline for artists today?

Garden Gang, G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S, Eastfield – Tuesday 2 November 2010 – The Old Wharf. Oxford Street, Digbeth, Birmingham

October 11, 2010

Here’s an update from Jessi,

Here’s advance notice for our upcoming shindig at the Old Wharf. We have the lovely Garden Gang over from Munich doing their catchy glam-punk thang, G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S doing a rare gig in Birmingham, or a rare gig anywhere come to think of it, and Eastfield doing the usual nonsense.

Tuesday 2 November 2010  – BIRMINGHAM Old Wharf.
Oxford Street, Digbeth.
Garden Gang + Gorgeous + Eastfield.
8pm. £5.

It may be a ‘school-night’, but that’s no excuse – come and numb the pain of work, or die a slave to the machine.
We will probably put Eastfield on first, like.

EASTFIELD/GARDEN GANG TOUR

Saturday 30 October 2010 - FELLING (GATESHEAD) Duke of Cumberland.
Sunday 31 October 2010 – ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE The Station.(afternoon gig)
Monday 1 November 2010 – ROMFORD The Horn.
Tuesday 2 November 2010  – BIRMINGHAM Old Wharf.
Wednesday 3 November 2010  – LONDON 12 Bar.
Thursday 4 November 2010 - SHOREHAM-on-SEA Duke of Wellington.
Friday 5 November 2010 - BRISTOL The Plough.

  • XOVA (Pronounced Cross Over) are the latest STREET REGGAE BAND to come out of the UK this year with their unique ability to produce stunning tracks that are not only hard hitting Reggae but truly cross over to capture the RNB market as well.

Coming out of Birmingham UK the home of such legends as Steel Pulse, UB40, Apache Indian, Pato Banton, Musical Youth and Bitty Mclean they follow in a long and fine tradition in Reggae music taken from the streets of this multi-cultural city.

The differences being that XOVA now fuse in their flavours from the streets of living in an urban city such as Birmingham in this new millenium.

  • Blog (called Complete Control) dedicated to punk rock music (and related genres like power pop, Oi! streetpunk, garage, mod revival, rock’n’roll, psycho, hardcore, surf, etc…) focused just on reviews and news. This is because two reasons:

1- I make a fanzine with interviews, articles, reports and the usual stuff but it’s about 200 pages so i publish one issue each year and a half.

2- In Spain there’s a lack of printed zines, webzines, mailorders, etc… and the level of english and other languages is very poor here (i’m an example! haha) so most people interested in good music don’t know about new releases of foreign labels, etc…

So we wanna make a blog with news about releases, fests, etc… and reviews of music (cd’s, lp’s, ep’s, etc…), literature (books, zines, etc…) and dvd’s. The music reviews will be in-depth reviews with some biographical info, links of the bands and labels, etc… and of course they will be totally independent.

COMPLETE CONTROL – Punk Fanzine / blog – Spain

October 9, 2010

Hi from Tarragona (Spain)!

I write you because a friend and myself we’re gonna start a blog (called Complete Control) dedicated to punk rock music (and related genres like power pop, Oi! streetpunk, garage, mod revival, rock’n’roll, psycho, hardcore, surf, etc…) focused just on reviews and news.

For now it’s gonna be only a internet blog but if we have a good response we’ll release it each three months in printed format and we’ll distribute it for free at gigs.

So if you want to contribute with promo stuff please tell us it and we’ll tell you our postal adress.

I also play in a “streetpunk’n’roll” band called Vondänikens and we’re always looking for new releases and projects! Our myspace is http://www.myspace.com/vondanikens

  • Folk legend Paul Brady was also highly critical of the lack of Government action in relation to illegal filesharing.

“If I hear anyone else in Government saying the arts will get us out of our present difficulties, I think I’ll scream,” Brady told Irish Communications Minister Eamon Ryan, on a panel at The Music Show, to applause from the audience.

“You seem to expect us artists to be cultural ambassadors and work for nothing. Three percent of people, in the last report, in this country think artists should be paid for their work,” Brady said. “I don’t know why we’re talking about three strikes. It is against the law. Why isn’t it one strike and you’re charged?”

  • In partnership with Radio To Go

Birmingham Music Heritage – Untold Stories revisits Birmingham during the period of 1965 – 1985 when the city dominated the world’s music scene.

Capturing memories and stories from some of the actual people who helped pioneer Birmingham’s music industry, the venues key to its success, and an insight into the musicians and music they produced with the influence from the city’s culture on their sound.

Over the next two years the project will be filming a series of interviews for a documentary about Birmingham’s popular music story.

It will also be recording a number of radio interviews & podcasts for free download from the project's website which will include stories, information and photographs relating to the artists themselves. A heritage trail will also be published with the release of the project DVD for free distribution across Birmingham at a number of exhibitions also during 2010.

  • It’s all there – the story of how the children of those early post-war immigrants came up with a vital new approach to reggae, mixed, matched and mashed up… and invented whole new styles of music along the way. And right now, there’s even a third generation doing new and vital stuff. Now, with the blessing of Birmingham Music Heritage, whose commission it was, I am making it available via Sound Cloud, after the jump. Know what? I love internet publishing.

The programme is in three parts – I built it so it would allow for a news bulletin and breaks for promos and/or ads. It’s also on offer to local community stations for rebroadcast, gratis – email me, using the link at the botton of this post, and I'll send you a DropBox invite. In the meantime, tag away to your hearts' content on the Soundcloud files

  • We hope you find everything you need on this site. If not, then feel free to email us with any questions/suggestions or call us on 029 20 37 37 07 with any questions you may have.

We have been providing studio facilities in Cardiff since 1996. In late 2007 we relocated to new premises and now have 6 air conditioned, fully equipped rooms.

At Musicbox we believe in quality of service, quality of environment and, most importantly, quality of sound in our rehearsal studios.

Our efficient and helpful staff are always on hand to help with anything from a technical problem to a forgotten lead.

Dufus: “Eth” – After 13 years & 10 full length recordings, Dufus is putting out a final album

October 4, 2010

After almost 13 years and 10 full length recordings, Dufus is putting out a final album. This album’s production includes Seth Faergolzia’s voice and compositional wizardry, a horn section, two drummers, violin, a choir, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, toy piano, accordion, flute, and circuit bent noise instruments. It is the band’s most grandiose and well plotted production. The content addresses a number of ideas including the importance of silence, long time friends, post-child breakups, love, schizophrenia, and profound dream stories.

A few words from Seth of Dufus: “The new album is finally done!!  We had an incredible Last Dufus Show with a 30 person band and special guest appearances by Regina Spektor, Adam Green and Only Son… you can see a few videos and reviews below… check out the new album for download or purchase of hard copy here….”
