Iron Man Records has had to develop a number of survival skills in the wasteland that is the world of independent music. Changing habits post Covid, the cost of living crisis, Brexit, the cost of touring, the price of fuel, streaming services, and online platforms have drained the life blood from the environment that musicians operate in. At a time when most people are overwhelmed with music to choose from, playing music has become an unsustainable career choice for many. Earning enough to just cover basic costs has become almost a dream. I would like to invite you to become an Iron Man Records Patron. Musicians need a number of different…

Tour Management: Crossing the UK/EU Border – Transporting musical instruments or equipment
No more ATA Carnets for small artists carrying their own musical instruments and equipment. MU member and founder of ukeartswork, Ian Smith says: “This in very real terms is great news.....It’s a game changer for smaller bands and musicians who do not have the budget to pay for a carnet, when in fact they're only taking over an instrument or two and an amp/mike.” Please note: This information and all information in this post does not constitute legal or immigration advice. It is accurate at the time of publication but may be subject to change without our prior knowledge. Temporarily taking musical instruments or equipment to the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland…
Tour Management: Going to Ireland and crossing the UK/EU Border using a Carnet
If you have Tour Dates in Ireland and you're travelling with a Carnet for your Musical Equipment, Mark at Iron Man Records explains how to keep it simple when crossing the UK/EU Border in a Splitter Van. I took Sinead O'Brien to Ireland in October 2022 working as Tour Manager via Holyhead to Dublin Port. Here's what I would recommend if you have Tour Dates to play, the UK/EU Border to cross, and a Carnet for Musical Equipment to deal with. The first thing to do is book your Ferry as required. Be sure to buy a “Passenger” ticket for a 9 seater Splitter van as it is classified as a…
Tour Management: Crossing the UK/EU Border Using a Carnet
If you are a band with European Tour Dates and are travelling in a Splitter Van with a Carnet across the UK/EU Border for the first time since Brexit, Mark at Iron Man Records explains how to keep it simple. I took an Americana Band called Mipso across Europe in June 2022. I learned a lot about post Brexit Border crossing. Here's what I would recommend if you have Tour Dates to play, the UK/EU Border to cross, and a Carnet to deal with. The first thing to do is go by Eurotunnel. Get a “passenger” ticket for a 9 seat Splitter van as it is classified as “a passenger carrying…
Mipso
In the springtime of 2019, Mipso headed out on several writing retreats around their home state, with a mission of laying down the framework for their self-titled sixth album. In a particularly charmed outing for the North Carolina-bred four-piece—fiddle player Libby Rodenbough, mandolinist Jacob Sharp, guitarist Joseph Terrell, and bassist Wood Robinson—Mipso holed up on a farm near Chapel Hill in the middle of May, teasing songs out in a barn whose tin roof rattled wildly during the near-daily downpours. As with all their writing sessions for Mipso, the band brought in instruments outside their usual repertoire (analog synths, lap steel guitars, a toy piano), slipping into a prolonged period of…

Blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Samantha Fish has rescheduled her six-date March 2021 UK tour for September 2021 and February 2022. Samantha’s shows at Newcastle Wylam Brewery, Edinburgh Queen’s Hall and London O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire will now take place in late September 2021. Following these rearranged shows, Samantha will play newly announced dates at Cardiff Tramshed and Brighton Chalk. The Culture Industry: Enlightenment or Mass Deception?
“Pop culture in general is the main thing they use to keep young people from developing any ideas.” - John Sinclair. John Sinclair, the renegade poet, scholar and cultural revolutionary releases his new album called "Mohawk," on Iron Man Records, on Monday 24th March 2014 with distribution by Cargo. The music was written and arranged by Steve Fly who mirrored John’s poems in the music by initially combing the tempo of the original songs recorded by John ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie, Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker and Thelonious Monk.
