Sidewalk Songs & City Stories

New Urban Folk

Sidewalk songs and City stories CD Cover - avenue_d by Jeff Lewois

TRIKONT US-0360
CD in Digipak with detailed Booklet in german and english
An original Trikont Compilation

Compiled by Martin Büsser

Martin Büsser is the author of the “Testcard – Articles on Pop History” series, music journalist, and author of numerous books. His latest publication is the book: “Anti-folk – From Beck to Adam Green”, Ventil Press, Germany, 2005

Songwriting celebrates a comeback. Terms like “Neofolk”, “Antifolk” or “Weird Folk” made the rounds for quite some time and have recently made a comeback. Whether you like it or not you will have to acknowledge that a new generation has taken over the microphone, whose aim is not to sound like another version of Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell. Their folk is hybrid and unorthodox using elements of free improvisation or the aggressiveness of punk, taking simple means of expression or create contrasts by mixing soothing melodies with drastic lyrics.

“Sidewalk Songs & City Stories” assembles artists, who represent an opposition to US mainstream, their big-city behome beginning differ clearly from any country nostalgia. Martin Buesser presents some forerunners of these new songwriters, who get mentioned again and again by the new generation as a big influence, including Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston. The majority of this compilation belongs to the still recent and partially unknown voices. It ranges from the absurd, neodadaistic collectives like Dufus and Huggabroomstik and the touching melancholy contributions of Kimya Dawson and Jeffrey Lewis up to musicians like The Microphones and Animal Collective, which connect folk with electronics and free improvisation.

This compilation does not want to create a new school or movement, but shows just how versatile the new songwriting generation deals with the American folk heritage and how they oppose without their pieces sounding like your usual protest song.

DUFUS at THE SPITZ 11th June 2007

May 23, 2007

The Spitz presents… Dufus + The Old Bamboo

Seth from DUFUS

“US anti-folk-rockers play one off London show”

Mon 11 June: American folk-rockers Dufus play a special London show at The Spitz as part of their UK tour. Laid back and bearded, Seth of Dufus cuts a typically nonchalant swagger as he commands up to 20 band members on stage at any one time. These are good old rockers in the country folk tradition.

Dufus likes to experiment with song structures just as much as the band like to wear their own handmade clothing. Often improvising during live performance, they blend different sounds in an unexpected and pleasantly surprising way, while all the time maintaining an uplifting experience deliberately for the listener’s benefit.

The live performance set up can vary from acoustic guitar with choir to full band and auxiliary instruments… up to 20 members but as few as two. See notes at foot of release for full band definitions and tree.

Dufus continually adds new members to the band, seeking variety and collaboration. Each album is a journey in sound with musicians’ skills ranging from virtuoso to amateur; and somehow it all works. Hi-Fi meets Lo-Fi.

Seth from DUFUS bw

Dufus has graced the stage with such acts as Ween, Animal Collective, Moldy Peaches, Yeahyeahyeahs, Herman Dune, Low, Kool Keith, Regina Spektor, Dub Trio, Cerberus Shoal, Adam Green, Usaisamonster, Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis, Moe, John Brown’s Body, Cornershop, Major Matt Mason, Langhorne Slim, and the Black Dice.

The Old Bamboo are a London 10 piece. Expect a heady mix of the experimental and melodramatic pop-folk. Influenced by Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo, Woog Riots, Jeffrey Lewis, Pavement and our headliners Dufus. In their own words, they sounds like ‘a fragile collage of those cute pictures of animals you get in the Metro, mounted with bubble gum.’ …Nice..!

Notes:
Definitions explained…

Dufus is a musician/artist collective based on a core group and rotating guest performer roster. Within the core exist 5 members (guitars, sampler, bass, drums, male and female vocalists). The outer level is composed of about 40 people who are members of one or more of these three groups: Fun Wearing Underwear, the Dorkestra and the Doofamily. These people are involved in a number of ways, some are dancers, choral singers, horns, orchestral instruments, visual artists (electro and organic). Dufus have recently added information specialists who collect data concerning any number of subjects and disperse it in one way or another (projections and info packets) through the audience in an attempt to open channels of thought.

Each performance takes on a life of its own keeping its form nonetheless because the core group remains stable. There is a good deal of improvisation but also well orchestrated planned ideas and great songs of newness.
