Police Bastard European Tour Dates 11th-18th April 2009

March 26, 2009

Police Bastard – has been influenced by many different bands ranging from the likes of Discharge and Chaos UK to Amebix, Rudimentary Peni, Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath, The Cardiacs and Killing Joke. This makes up a dark, agressive hardcore sound without losing power or focus. Risen from the ashes of Britian’s largest hardcore thrash bands: Doom, Sore Throat, Filthkick, Sensa Yuma and Contempt, Police Bastard was born in May of 1994. In a year and a half they stacked up a staggering number of gigs and a large following.

“Police Bastard – Traumatized – Like a demonic Black Bloc storming the stock exchange with baseball bats, this album belts out of the speakers and storms around the room taking no prisoners.” – Peppermint Iguana

  • Berlin's Mengenlehrer Uhr or Set Theory Clock was commissioned by the Berlin Senate in 1975 and designed by Dieter Binninger and was originally located at Kurfürstendamm on the corner with Uhlandstraße. It was the first clock, which told the time using illuminated, coloured fields and was even included in the Guinness Book of Records. After it was decommissioned by the Senate in 1995, it was given a new home in Budapester Straße in front of the Europa Center through an initiative brought about by various business people in 1996.

  • In May 1938 a concentration camp was established at Flossenbürg, in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria, near the Czech border. This camp was originally intended for criminals, "asocial" persons, and Jews, but it grew to include political prisoners and foreign prisoners of war. The largest number of the latter were Soviets. The site was chosen for its granite hills, and prisoners were put to work in a large quarry.

Flossenbürg was liberated by the U.S. Army on 23 April 1945. By that time, some 30,000 inmates had died in Flossenbürg and its subcamps. (Memorials at the camp state the number as over 74,000, but recent research indicates it was around 30,000.)

  • On March 20th, 1933, the SS commander and temporary police chief of Munich, Heinrich Himmler, announced the construction of the first concentration camp in Bavaria. The camp was built on the premises of the former "Royal Powder and Ammunition Factory Dachau", which was situated close to the market town of Dachau during WW I. The first detainees, who arrived on March 22nd, were political prisoners, particularly communists, and were later joined by social democrats and Jews.

The second commander at Dachau, Theodor Eicke, who took over from Hilmar Wäckerle on June 26th, 1933, turned the concentration camp into a "school of violence" (Hans-Günter Richardi). Here, he developed the system of Nazi concentration camps and trained the guards in the relentless "Dachau spirit" (Rudolf Höß) that knew no mercy for the prisoners. Eicke's philosophy culminated in the phrase "tolerance is weakness".

  • GEBÄUDE 9 (building no. 9), a former warehouse, is situated inside a defunct factory site on the right bank of the river Rhine.

Since 1996, it is operated by a group of local promoters. Meanwhile, it has become vital to Cologne's vivid cultural scenery. The 500 capacity venue has established itself on the German touring circuit, attracting a lot of high profile, internationally acclaimed artists – from indie all-stars, rock legends, cutting edge dance and urban acts, to showcasing the rising talent of the future.

The GEBÄUDE 9 premises consist of the bar room, which has a more intimate ambience, and the theater hall, where the concerts etc. take place.

  • Venue in Zurich Switzerland. The night I was there with Jay Reatard the old bass player from Celtic frost was running "Karaoke from Hell." Good sound, good people.

  • The UK Home Office has introduced new bureaucratic procedures for organisations that wish to invite non-EU artists and academics to the UK. As professionals committed to the principles of internationalism and cultural exchange, we are dismayed by these new regulations – which will curb our invitations to non-EU artists and academics to visit the UK for talks, artist residencies, conferences and temporary exhibitions.
  • As band and follower, we go back a long way. That’s myself and The Nightingales. Back, indeed, to their former incarnation as Birmingham punksters, The Prefects. Sullen, deadpan pioneers of the state of embryonic musicality. Caught them at Manchester’s Electric Circus in 1977 and then, numerous times, supporting The Fall. Always loved them and quietly filed them away next to Subway Sect who, likewise, seemed to marry thoughtfulness to their jagged overtones.

They were like secret little bands and later, both would gather encouragement from a certain Mr Peel. However, that very fact also served to seal their fate. As such, The Nightingales, led by the enigmatic Rob Lloyd, now of suitably unfashionable Telford, never gained anything resembling an identifiable following.

  • Right or wrong – weak or strong

… I'll be what I am, a solitary man. It's not that I'm absolutely friendless, it's just that nobody regularly keeps in touch with me or I with them, so oftentimes I find myself drinking alone. However, I have no qualms about this and anyway have done so quite consistantly throughout my life by choice. There's no real art to solitary drinking but in my opinion, unless you are simply one of those people that struggles in your own company, there are plenty pluses to be gained from imbibing on your Jones.

Nightingales – Insult To injury reviewed by JENNIFER KELLY for BLURT

March 16, 2009

Age has not mellowed the wrath of Robert Lloyd. The Nightingales frontman, who got his start opening for the Clash and the Slits in early 1980s Presets, has lost not an ounce of his bile and mordant humor in this, his band’s third album since a 2004 reunion. Silkily malevolent, over the clash and clatter of a kicking band, he murmurs withering asides and surreal observations. A drone and haze slips between boxy, staccato beats, infusing cuts like “Double Whammy Bar” and “Down with the Blue Lobsters” with a feverish hallucinatory aura. Daren Garratt’s huge galloping beats anchor the hardest rocking cuts – “Little Lambs” and “Big Bones” – providing a hard foundation for the chaotic dual guitars of Presets original Alan Apperley and (much younger) Matt Wood.

Even lighter songs have disquieting undertones. The bucolic “Kirkless Ken” begins with the bleak couplet, “Of the 13 sentences to say before you die/He couldn’t get his tongue around “I’m H-A-P-P-Y”, the music hall nonchalance of “Former Florist to the Queen” envelopes lyrics about domestic bliss and every sort of depravity. The band, slightly reconfigured since last year’s What’s Not to Love, includes bass player Andreas Schmid of the legendary krautrock outfit Faust – and the album was recorded by Hans-Joachim Irmler at the band’s own studio in Scheer, Germany. Yet if Lloyd has made a Faustian bargain, it seems to have paid off. This is his fiercest, most lacerating album yet, better by a good margin than the mid-1980s Pigs on Purpose…and that was excellent.

Standout Tracks: “Double Whammy Bar,” “Little Lambs” “Down with the Blue Lobsters”
