“Police Bastard – ‘It’s Good To Hate’ CD and DVD Four new tracks and one cover here and its typical Police Bastard…powerful, inspiring, hardcore punk with passionate vocals (incidentally, when did Stu-Pid grow up and come just plain ‘Pid’?!). If any changes are noticeable since their original incarnation, then it’s probably a bit more metal influenced, with the occasional guitar screech and more Doom-esque growls of anguish, but apart from that its good as ever and especially that ‘Pid’ is back on vocals. The cover is The Mob’s ‘I Wish’ which, after the gentle intro, gets the Bastard treatment and it works too. The DVD has footage of the band live, mainly at Birmingham’s Market Tavern, but also from a European outdoor festival and the Kopi squat. It’s good quality (especially the outdoor one) and really makes me long to catch them live again as the last time was way back when 120 Rats was open (Late 90’s). 7/10.” Bald Cactus Issue 28 2011

The release contains a CD featuring four new songs and one cover version with an additional DVD containing live footage collected between 2007 and 2010. The record features the work of founding band members Pid and John Doom doing dual vocals together again for the first time in ten years. The gigs and recordings have also seen the return of Chris Crass, who took over on bass from Trogg in 1994. Seano Porno and Mark Badger from Last Under The Sun have picked up the work of guitars and additional vocals and the drummer is Simon James who also plays in Last Under The Sun and formerly of Rivers Edge. The release is dedicated to Trogg, Police Bastard’s first bass player who passed away in 2008. It was because of Trogg and his enthusiasm to do it all again that Police Bastard started writing, rehearsing, recording and touring again.

CD tracks include: The Lie, God Off, Erosion, Born To Die and a cover of I Wish (Originally written by The Mob)

DVD includes: Keep An Active Mind (2007-2008), Police Bastard Live at 25 Jahre AU Festival, Frankfurt, Germany (2008), Police Bastard Live at Kopi, Berlin, Germany (2010).

The CD tracks were Recorded, mixed, produced and mastered by Simon Reeves at Framework Recording Studios, Musoplex. Simon has worked with the likes of Napalm Death, Cathedral, Meathook Seed, and a host of others from The Cubans, Harpies, and The Nightingales. After a nearly 20 year dedication to new and alternative music in all its many forms, he has become a master at capturing ferocious guitars and brutal sounds. The new recordings are by far the best thing the band has produced to date.

The DVD includes “Keep an Active Mind” a film by Iron Man Records, edited by Anthony J. Hughes, documenting a year in the life of Police Bastard with footage from a show the band organised at The Market Tavern, Birmingham 2007, Steve Ignorant’s “Feeding of the 5,000” aftershow party, London 2007 and a tour of Europe in 2008 organised by Alerta Antifascista. The footage includes some live performances and out takes of the band on tour with a budget you can stick under a glass.

The footage of Police Bastard Live at 25 Jahre AU Festival, Frankfurt and Live at Kopi, Berlin, Germany was filmed, edited and directed by Peter Rhead.

“More great stuff from Iron Man in Birmingham…this was a total surprise, cause I’d not even realised that they had got anything new out, I’d seen em a couple of years before at the after party gig following Steve Ignorant’s Feeding of the 5000 gig (they were awesome then!) but assumed as I’d heard/seen nothing since that they’d split. Well a few weeks after getting this they played at the Old Wharf in Birmingham on a Sunday night, and along with Leatherface, I’d say the best band I’ve seen in 2010. This CD again was recorded a good while ago, but the best things are worth waiting for! 5 new tracks of brutal anarcho punk rock at its best! 4 own songs (like the title “God Off”) and a Mob cover (“I Wish”). Great line-up with (Stu)Pid and Jonny Doom together again on vocals, and 2 folk from Last Under The Sun to beef things up. Awesome! Steven James Pratt a.k.a Fly Agaric 23 (Steve Fly) Biography

Born April 15th 1976 in Wordsley, England, and grew up as a competitive swimmer into his teens when he came across Jazz music, speed Metal, hip-hop, drum and bass, and playing drums in a school band. This led to Steven developing his drumming and DJ skills over the next 20 years.

Steve Fly’s first ‘live’ gig was drumming with ‘Surgery’ at Thorns School in 1991, and went on to play with local Stourbridge garage punk band ‘Indigo Jane’ at such venues as J.B’s Dudley, The ‘Source’, ‘The Mitre’ in Stourbridge, and support for Babylon Zoo and Fret Blanket in Kidderminster.

In 1993 Steven briefly played with Kinver based band ‘Taxi’ and recorded and album together and supported vocalist ‘Sam Brown’ at the Robin Hood R n’B club. In 1994 Steve played drums for a short time with the Birmingham based ‘live’ drum & bass band ‘Plutonik’, featuring vocalist Chrissy Van Dyke.

In 1994 fly bought his first pair of turntables, and was instantly attracted to scratching and spinning vinyl, and began buying and playing a mixture of old Jazz, new electronica, drum & bass, break-beats and other soul/funk/jazz oddities. This led to him playing records with local DJ crew’s ‘Lowlife’ and ‘Lifted’ (94-2001) and by 1998 starting a successful ‘soul/jazz/funk/breaks’ night in and around Stourbridge called ‘Pass the peas’.  Other gigs included dj slots with Craig Fields and the ‘Nazareth’ DJ crew,  and gigs at the Q-club Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Wales, and the Glastonbury festival 2000.

In 1998 Fly Agaric was billed with Fuzz Townsend on the bill for Graffiti Bastards 2, an art and music exhibition featuring and produced by CHU. This collaboration led to fly travelling up to York, and Finsbury Park studio’s to record a ‘live’ drum track for the first full album from UK left-field hip-hop crew New Flesh. (Part2, Toastie Taylor, Juice Aleem, DJ Weston) The resulting track ‘Quantum Mechanix’ turned out to be fly’s first release, launched in 1999 on Big Dada Records 0013, and stands as a testament to alternative UK hip hop at the turn of the millennium.

In 1999, together with Indian composer Surrinder Sandhu, Steve played drums and turntables on three tracks recorded at Birmingham’s D.E.P international studios and that were subsequently pressed onto 200 10” vinyl discs, all of which were stamped with a rubber ink stamp depicting the ‘Mayan Tzolkin’. Out of 200 records I probably sold 2, but it has made 2000 people smile since.

On April 10th 2000 Fly travelled to America to hear Dr Robert Anton Wilson lecture, while on his visit he had a synchronistic meeting at ‘The Planetwork’ conference with virtuoso bassist and composer Kai Eckhardt. This led to a steady flow of collaborations and gigs across the US during the next  5 years,  most notably with Jazz Funk Jam band ‘Garaj Mahal’ featuring Kai, Fareed Haque, Eric Levy and Alan Hertz, since replaced by drummer Sean Rickman. Steve Fly can be heard playing turntables on 3 cuts from their album ‘Mondo Garaj (2001) and 3 cuts from ‘Blueberry Cave’ (2005). He performed over 30 live shows in more than 10 different states including the cities New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Portland, Oakland, L.A, Saint Louis and Santa Cruz. The band have received worldwide acclaim, reviews, and praise from fellow musicians and fans alike.

In October 2005, Fly flew back to the UK and temporarily put down his drum sticks and records in favour of picking up his pen, partly due to the fact he had no drums or turntables in the UK and no shows were on the horizon. By early 2006 fly had been busy over the last year mixing, remixing and creating music using Reason and sample based music on his Mac-book, his first computer since an Atari 900, some samples of which can be heard at his soundcloud account here:

In March 2007 Steve Fly moved to Amsterdam where he settled into a new life there, writing and  working at the coffeeshop 420, that happens, by chance, to be the preferred coffeeshop, and poets residence of Poet/activist John Sinclair. Over the last six years John Sinclair has had a massive influence on Steve’s musical directions and output, plus on his writing and avid reading habits. Steve lived together ‘on and off’ for 3 years with John, and has toured England, Holland, and Germany as John’s drummer and co-pilot, featuring on several recordings and dozens of live shows with fellow Amsterdam blues scholars such as: Mark Ritsema, Leslie Lopez, Vicente Pino, and Tom Worrell from New Orleans.

Late August 2010, Steve Fly hosted some of the band in who were travelling from the recent 101 runners tour of Europe, including Tom Worrell, artist Frenchy, and John. Steve quickly seized the chance to record a session while Tom and John were in town, and with the help of some friends: Leslie Lopez, Larry Hayden, and Mau we managed to get two days of recordings that turned into the album ‘Let’s Go Get Em’ on No Cover Records (2011) with artwork by CHU and Frenchy.

On 1st March 2011 Fly visited John in London to record drums along with Youth, George Butler, Brian James, Angie Brown, Alan Clayton, for 3 cuts on the new Beatnik Youth album, out on Track Records.

Since 2009 Steve fly has also been jamming with guitarist Vicente Pino, and together they have performed over 50 shows mostly in and around Amsterdam, but as far afield as Ghent, Belgium, under the name Dr Marshmallow Cubicle. The duo now have three unreleased albums, (Marshy, Sod The Rich, John Sinclair and the Amsterdam Blues Scholars) they have over 50 ‘live’ videos available on youtube (flyagaric23 – playliists). Their unique improvised guitar and drum music has captured the imagination of many people, and they’ll return to the stage in spring 2013.

Steven recently signed an album deal with Iron Man Records to produce the latest John Sinclair album due for release this summer. It features fly on drums, brushes, turntables, Cello, and production along with his star engineer Tim Egmond (Senior Modulator). The album titled ‘Mohawk’ is fly’s interpretation of John’s poems that are all taken from a suite dedicated to Thelonious Monk, and that feature tales of Be-Bop, Bird, Dizzy and Monk. The album will be crafted and designed in collaboration with Graffiti legend CHU, and together with Iron Man Records we are poised to release a total new audio/visual experience, nicely tying together the John Sinclair/Steve Fly synergy produced over the previous few years.

John Sinclair – Beatnik Youth CD

John Sinclair - Beatnik Youth
While many know John Sinclair as the White Panther firebrand who stoked the MC5’s insurrectionary manifesto, or drug bust victim released after John Lennon’s high-profile intercession, his roots stretch back to jazz and the beats, as writer, avant-garde champion and poet. Sinclair’s large legend allows him to travel the world, collaborating with like-minded souls; a living embodiment of the original free spirit that fought to emancipate a generation, one of the few left still flying the freak flag as high as he can hoist it.

Since the early 90s, Sinclair has released albums of his poetry, but Beatnik Youth is the high-profile statement he’s been meant to make all his life. This poorly served generation needs it: that militant energy which released the bats in the 60s is crucially booted into the 21st Century in a riotous celebration of personal freedom, cultural trailblazers and, frankly, marijuana.

Sinclair’s core cohorts are producer-bassist Youth and The Dirty Strangers’ singer-guitarist Alan Clayton (plus engineer-keyboardist Michael Rendall). Different tracks also feature Howard Marks, Zodiac Mindwarp, Mark Stewart, Primal Scream, singer Angie Brown and one Beef Pilchards. Between insidious soul choruses over diverse backdrops, Sinclair barks, growls, rails, coos and guffaws with a roaring animated passion undimmed by his 70-plus years. Moods straddle the smokily atmospheric (Testify, Sitartha), balls-out rockers (Ain’t Nobody’s Business, 1965-composed doper anthem Good Stuff) or free-form cinematic (Brilliant Corners homaging Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs). Everybody Needs Somebody’s motorik carries Sinclair’s infamous (Thelonious) Monk In Orbit poem, while the Primals-driven Culture-Cide (hijacked from Youth’s recent Mark Stewart sessions) becomes a weed-for-all riot with Howard Marks gleefully piling in. That Old Man is a spirits-lifting reflection on growing old disgracefully, concluding that this old man is “still alive and kicking”. A rare delight all round. – Kris Needs

They call him “The Big Chief”. From Detroit to New Orleans and from Los Angeles to Amsterdam, John Sinclair is still the cigar-chomping, king-size, psychedelic old-gangster poet, a living legend, a veteran of the counterculture, a survivor of the Marijuana Wars, and one of the last bohemians still standing. As a co-founder of the Detroit underground newspaper The Fifth Estate, manager of punk godfathers MC5, and Chairman of the White Panther Party – described on Wikipedia in these modern times as “a far-left, anti-racist, white American political collective founded in 1968 and dedicated to ‘cultural revolution’” his mark on the boho rock & roll underground has been unique.

In 1969, with Richard Nixon in the White House, Vietnam in chaos in the wake of the Viet Cong’s near-suicidal Tet Offensive, and American cities still scared and scarred from urban riots, even the comparatively harmless agitprop pranks of White Panther “cultural revolution” had those in power reaching for their metaphoric – and sometimes actual – revolvers. Authorities remembered how John had organized the MC5’s playing outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the only band actually able to perform before Mayor Daley’s rabid police department violently derailed the massive anti-Vietnam war rally with teargas, billy clubs, and helicopter support.

John was deemed a danger to society and set up like a bowling pin. After handing a couple of joints to a hassling hippie who turned out to be an undercover narcotics agent, John found himself on the bad end of a ten year jail term. At the same time though he became a cause celebre. Free John Sinclair became one more battle cry in an embattled era. Protests, propaganda, and a giant concert in Ann Arbor headlined by John Lennon and Yoko Ono ultimately resulted in John’s release in November 1971. Lennon even wrote a song about him called ‘John Sinclair’ which he included on his ‘Sometime In New York City’ album.

In common with much that happens with John, a meeting with producer Youth (Paul McCartneys ‘Fireman’, Primal Scream, The Verve etc & Killing Joke bass player) that sowed the creative seeds was a matter of stoned synchronicity. As Track Records boss Ian Grant tells it , “Alan Clayton told me he had ‘John Sinclair coming round tomorrow.’ I said “the John Sinclair”. One night Zodiac (Mindwarp) was on the bill the Dirty Strangers and Youth was very taken with John. “I want to make a jazz album with John”. Since then, the two met at Youths house whenever he was home, and when John was in the country, and recorded the album.”

And – through the course of those recordings – John, always so associated with the 1960s, took a serious step into the ways of the 21st century, with the same intoned poetry (he even tells the tale of Thelonious Monk on acid), but with melodic backing vocals, highly inventive production, even a nod to hip-hop, but still remembering his first loves of blues, be-bop, and classic rock & roll. Beatnik Youth is one more step in the Big Chief’s long zigzag trip that seems set to continue all the way to the far blue horizon. Summing up John Sinclair, you can only say with certainty that the beatnik goes on.

Guest on the album include, Howard Marks, Keith Levine, Bobby Gillespie, Brian James, Angie Brown, Zodiac (Mindwarp), Jesse Wood, Mark Stewart, Alan Clayton and Youth plays bass on all tracks.

Police Bastard – “It’s Good To HATE” will be released through Birmingham’s Iron Man Records, May 23rd 2010. The release contains a CD featuring four new songs and one cover version with an additional DVD containing live footage collected between 2007 and 2010. The record features the work of founding band members Pid and John Doom doing dual vocals together again for the first time in ten years. The gigs and recordings have also seen the return of Chris Crass, who took over on bass from Trogg in 1994. Seano Porno and Mark Badger from Last Under The Sun have picked up the work of guitars and additional vocals and the drummer is Simon James who also plays in Last Under The Sun and formerly of Rivers Edge.  The release is dedicated to Trogg, Police Bastard’s first bass player who passed away in 2008. It was because of Trogg and his enthusiasm to do it all again that Police Bastard started writing, rehearsing, recording and touring again.

CD tracks include: The Lie, God Off, Erosion, Born To Die and a cover of I Wish (Originally written by The Mob)

DVD includes: Keep An Active Mind (2007-2008), Police Bastard Live at 25 Jahre AU Festival, Frankfurt, Germany (2008), Police Bastard Live at Kopi, Berlin, Germany (2010).

The CD tracks were Recorded, mixed, produced and mastered by Simon Reeves at Framework Recording Studios, Musoplex. Simon has worked with the likes of Napalm Death, Cathedral, Meathook Seed, and a host of others from The Cubans, Harpies, and The Nightingales. After a nearly 20 year dedication to new and alternative music in all its many forms, he has become a master at capturing ferocious guitars and brutal sounds. The new recordings are by far the best thing the band has produced to date.

The DVD includes “Keep an Active Mind” a film by Iron Man Records, edited by Anthony J. Hughes, documenting a year in the life of Police Bastard with footage from a show the band organised at The Market Tavern, Birmingham 2007, Steve Ignorant’s “Feeding of the 5,000” aftershow party, London 2007 and a tour of Europe in 2008 organised by Alerta Antifascista. The footage includes some live performances and out takes of the band on tour with a budget you can stick under a glass.

The footage of Police Bastard Live at 25 Jahre AU Festival, Frankfurt and Live at Kopi, Berlin, Germany was filmed, edited and directed by Peter Rhead.
